More specifically, I re-visit her 2001 essay entitled “A Dialectical View of Theory and Practice” and read it afresh through the lenses of yin-yang theory. I conclude by highlighting three philosophical resonances between Jorgensen’s ideas and yin-yang theory: balance, change, and space

    On Large Ensembles: A Cross-Cultural Content Analysis of English and Chinese-language Articles

    This article reports a cross-cultural analysis of journal articles pertaining to large ensembles published in English and Chinese languages from 2007–17. Topics addressed in the articles included issues of equity and access, the value of large ensembles in young people’s lives and to the field of music education, the development of large ensemble music education in Asia, and implications for the field of conductor-teacher preparation. Three conceptually distinct but interrelated themes emerged: power, participation, and pedagogy. “Power” refers to the authority, command, and influence commonly associated with conductors. “Participation” refers to issues of access, recruitment, retention, attrition, and other sociological issues related to participation in large ensembles. “Pedagogy” refers to calls for changes in the teaching and delivery of large ensemble programs. The article closes with recommendations for international research and pedagogical development concerning music education’s large ensembles

    On relational learning and discovery in social networks: a survey

    The social networking scene has evolved tremendously over the years. It has grown in relational complexities that extend a vast presence onto popular social media platforms on the internet. With the advance of sentimental computing and social complexity, relationships which were once thought to be simple have now become multi-dimensional and widespread in the online scene. This explosion in the online social scene has attracted much research attention. The main aims of this work revolve around the knowledge discovery and datamining processes of these feature-rich relations. In this paper, we provide a survey of relational learning and discovery through popular social analysis of different structure types which are integral to applications within the emerging field of sentimental and affective computing. It is hoped that this contribution will add to the clarity of how social networks are analyzed with the latest groundbreaking methods and provide certain directions for future improvements

    Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma: Review and Updates of Current Management Strategies

    The classification of T-cell and natural-killer- (NK-) cell lymphomas has been updated in the 4th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of the haematopoietic and lymphoid tissue published in 2008. Based on recent epidemiological studies, NK-cell lymphomas occur almost exclusively in Asia and South America, although T-cell lymphomas appear to occur in the East as commonly as in the West. Due to the low prevalence of this disease, diagnosis and optimal treatment of patients have not been studied prospectively in large randomized trials. Nevertheless, there has been development in the understanding of T-cell lymphomas and how they should be managed; FDG-PET emerges as an increasingly important tool in diagnosis, gene-expression signatures may aid with prognostication in the future, and novel therapies are currently being studied to improve outcomes in T-cell lymphomas. More work, however, needs to be done, and international collaboration will be pertinent to deriving meaningful results from future clinical studies

    Large Language Models of Code Fail at Completing Code with Potential Bugs

    Large language models of code (Code-LLMs) have recently brought tremendous advances to code completion, a fundamental feature of programming assistance and code intelligence. However, most existing works ignore the possible presence of bugs in the code context for generation, which are inevitable in software development. Therefore, we introduce and study the buggy-code completion problem, inspired by the realistic scenario of real-time code suggestion where the code context contains potential bugs -- anti-patterns that can become bugs in the completed program. To systematically study the task, we introduce two datasets: one with synthetic bugs derived from semantics-altering operator changes (buggy-HumanEval) and one with realistic bugs derived from user submissions to coding problems (buggy-FixEval). We find that the presence of potential bugs significantly degrades the generation performance of the high-performing Code-LLMs. For instance, the passing rates of CodeGen-2B-mono on test cases of buggy-HumanEval drop more than 50% given a single potential bug in the context. Finally, we investigate several post-hoc methods for mitigating the adverse effect of potential bugs and find that there remains a large gap in post-mitigation performance.Comment: 25 page

    Strain-induced quantum dots by self-organized stressors

    Novel in situ method to produce quantum dots is reported. Three‐dimensional confinement of carriers to a GaInAs/GaAs quantum welldots is observed by photoluminescence. The confinement potential is induced by stressors, formed by self‐organizing growth of InP nanoscale islands on top barrier GaAssurface. Two transitions arising from the strain‐induced quantum dots produced by two types of InP islands are identified. The luminescence from higher electronic states of the quantum dots having a level splitting of 8 meV is also observed.Peer reviewe

    Quantifying the Persistence of Vaccine-Related T Cell Epitopes in Circulating Swine Influenza A Strains from 2013-2017

    When swine flu vaccines and circulating influenza A virus (IAV) strains are poorly matched, vaccine-induced antibodies may not protect from infection. Highly conserved T cell epitopes may, however, have a disease-mitigating effect. The degree of T cell epitope conservation among circulating strains and vaccine strains can vary, which may also explain differences in vaccine efficacy. Here, we evaluate a previously developed conserved T cell epitope-based vaccine and determine the persistence of T cell epitope conservation over time. We used a pair-wise homology score to define the conservation between the vaccine’s swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) class I and II-restricted epitopes and T cell epitopes found in 1272 swine IAV strains sequenced between 2013 and 2017. Twenty-four of the 48 total T cell epitopes included in the epitope-based vaccine were highly conserved and found in >1000 circulating swine IAV strains over the 5-year period. In contrast, commercial swine IAV vaccines developed in 2013 exhibited a declining conservation with the circulating IAV strains over the same 5-year period. Conserved T cell epitope vaccines may be a useful adjunct for commercial swine flu vaccines and to improve protection against influenza when antibodies are not cross-reactive

    Non-Timber Forest Products are a potential that can be managed to overcome forestry and community economic problems. Improvement of eucalyptus oil processing and management can affect the income of eucalyptus oil farmers. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide knowledge about improving the quality of eucalyptus oil through improving eucalyptus oil processing methods and utilizing eucalyptus leaf waste as an energy source through making charcoal briquettes. The stages of the activity are: 1) The initial approach is carried out with the head of the Buru FMU to facilitate meetings with the KPH-assisted farmer groups to be addressed, 2) Implementation of counseling, lectures and questions and answers about various knowledge related to the utilization of Non-Timber Forest Products. How is eucalyptus oil processed and how is the management carried out by eucalyptus oil farmers, and 3) Observation of eucalyptus oil cooking places to see the raw materials and boilers used. This activity was carried out cooperatively and well because the Waspait village community was very enthusiastic about their curiosity which was reflected when participating in the counseling which was carried out by building dialogue in the form of questions related to the eucalyptus oil processing activities carried out
